Company Profile
Bargate Murray is a leading luxury asset law firm, recognised in particular for its expertise in the superyacht and private aviation sectors, spanning both contentious and non-contentious practice.
While client confidentiality is key, the firm is proud to have represented clients on many of the largest yachts built to date, working with numerous high-profile vessels in the superyacht fleet, while continuing to assist yacht owners across the full breadth of the global superyacht fleet.
The firm’s non-contentious lawyers have significant experience in all matters of superyacht construction, sale and purchase, and ownership, acting as a trusted adviser to superyacht owners the world over.
The firm’s contentious lawyers are specialists in superyacht and aviation dispute resolution. Experts in High Court litigation and international arbitration alike, the firm also has a thriving marine recoveries practice.
Bargate Murray also has a strong client base of industry stakeholders, ranging from leading shipyards to marinas, banks, insurers and superyacht support professionals.
The firm shows its strength in depth with several of its specialist lawyers recognised as leaders in their fields in global legal directories.
Bargate Murray has an established, strong cross-departmental group which meets to share knowledge and deepen its expertise. The firm prides itself on its tailored approach to meet the needs of its individual clients.
Bargate Murray provides a comprehensive range of services within its superyacht practice, with its lawyers covering a range of legal issues including yacht construction, sale and purchase, yacht regulation, yacht finance and taxation. Many of these transactions are highly complicated and involve several jurisdictions.
The firm’s senior lawyers are all recognised as leaders in their respective fields.
With over 35 years’ experience, Founder Quentin Bargate is a trusted adviser to UHNW individuals, their family offices and UK-based and international corporations, advising on all aspects of the ownership, acquisition, disposal and operation of luxury assets. He comes from a background in maritime law, and was a litigation partner at Simmons & Simmons and its former head of the international trade and shipping group.
Elliot Bishop joined the firm in 2023. Recognised in the Chambers UK 2023: Shipping guide, he is well known in the marine and aviation sectors for his litigation skills. He has acted in multi-jurisdictional litigation on behalf of major banks and insurers in respect of policy coverage issues and international enforcement of loan security against pleasure boats, superyachts and private jets. In addition, he acts for the UK’s largest marinas and has considerable experience of charter disputes and dealing with disputed commission payments arising out of the sale and purchase of vessels.
Robert Calleja also joined Bargate Murray in 2023 and heads up the firm’s Aviation department. An experienced asset finance lawyer with experience working internationally, Robert has extensive aviation and marine finance experience.
