Spear’s Review

The boys of Mayo College, a boarding school in northern India, are taught a design thinking model – think, make, break, repeat – so they are prepared to respond in an agile fashion to the inevitable changes of the future.

Students at Mayo have access to a 187-acre campus and enjoy a wide range of sports and co-curricular activities alongside a curriculum designed to prepare boys for life after boarding school

To develop an international outlook, students are encouraged to take overseas trips on exchange programmes to Europe, South Africa, the US and Australia. They learn about languages, sport and other cultures, and their visiting counterparts bring their different perspectives to the school itself. Nearly 30 per cent of students go overseas for higher education.

Academics

The dual curriculum school offers IGCSE and A-Level exams, along with the national CBSE curriculum. Students sit a range of tests such as the SATs, the LNAT (Law National Aptitude Test) and CLAT (Common Law Admission Test).

School Profile

The all-boys Mayo College in north-western India educates students from Grade 4 to Grade 12. Founded in 1875, the legacy boarding school draws boys from across India and abroad, bringing together varied backgrounds and ambitions. It offers both Cambridge Assessment International Education and Central Board of Secondary Education curricula. The 187-acre campus lies against the Aravalli range, its Indo-Saracenic buildings giving the school a distinctive presence. Much of the land remains open: playing fields, riding tracks and long green stretches that shape a life lived as much outdoors as inside classrooms.

Sport forms a central rhythm of life at Mayo. The campus includes a shooting range, a nine-hole golf course, a polo ground and stables housing about 70 horses. A yoga centre and extensive playing fields support more than 22 sports. An Olympic-sized swimming pool and six pickleball courts are under construction. The campus museum holds a collection of antiques and armoury, while an AI Centre of Excellence signals engagement with emerging technologies. A modern astronomical observatory and dedicated schools for art, music and design expand intellectual and creative life.

At Mayo a boy’s boarding life begins at age 8 in Grade 4. The Junior School sits on its own campus with three houses that provide a joyful introduction to residential life. Middle School in Grades 7 and 8 encourages independence and interdisciplinary study. Senior School adds academic rigour with structured career guidance. Twelve boarding houses form the pastoral backbone of the institution, building responsibility and community. For 150 years the school has shaped young men who are self-aware, grounded and capable of taking responsibility for themselves and the communities they inhabit today and into the future.

Head teacher

Saurav Sinha assumed the headship of Mayo College in February 2024. A product of a boarding school himself, Sinha holds an MBA from London Business School. His career has spanned banking, healthcare, digital marketing and education and he has held senior leadership roles at Pathways International and Harrow Bengaluru.

University and college destinations

Students apply to university destinations worldwide, with the UK, US and Australia being popular choices. Alum have read at Ivy Leagues as well as Oxbridge in the school's 150-year history.

Admissions

Students take a pen and paper aptitude test in English and Math for entry, followed by an online or in-person interview.  These tests are held across India and overseas in October and January of each year to allow students from across the world to apply.
