Dawson Cornwell's longest-standing partner, Russell Bywater has over 30 years' experience in family law. He has worked on high-profile cases such as Villiers v Villiers, a landmark Supreme Court case that some argue gave a green light for ‘divorce tourism’.
Bywater heads the firm's matrimonial department and advises on all areas of family law. He has particular expertise in heavy international trust cases, and is a member of the International Bar Association, a trained mediator and a frequent speaker on family law.
He tells Spear's that his passion for family law stems from seeing the 'enduring nature of the human spirit and its capacity to forgive and move on'. While divorces can inevitably be confrontational, Bywater enjoys the process of culminating a difficult process with fair settlements sans acrimony.
Russell Bywater has been a partner at Dawson Cornwell for 30 years. He specialises in marital and non-marital financial remedy work, which is complemented by the firm's stellar international children department. He takes a no-nonsense approach, with an ability to cut to the chase with both clients and the other side.
Russell's practice profile reflects the international legal centre in which he operates; cases involving just English parties and assets are rare. He has acquired an understanding of property and taxation regimes in a variety of jurisdictions.
He has a high settlement rate (90%), but has also litigated complex cases in the highest courts including the English Court of Appeal and the UK Supreme Court.
