Penningtons Manches Cooper partner Michael Cash has spent more than two decades advising HNW clients in domestic and international disputes, from breach of trust claims to disputes over wills and claims under the Inheritance Act. He outlines the mantra that has cemented his reputation as a trusted adviser: ‘Remember who pays the bills, and why. Service to the client is key.’

Whatever the facts of the case at hand, Cash describes his role as helping clients to navigate their way through legal issues they might otherwise find bewildering and emotionally challenging. He is a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, as well as the Association of Contentious Trust and Probate Specialists and the Charity Law Association.

Michael thinks that the rise in number and intensity of intra-family disputes is driven by an increasingly sophisticated approach to questions of medical capacity and the sad rise of financial abuse of the vulnerable. In his view, a smarter approach between banks, families and social services is much needed to enable lawyers to assist their clients through these emotionally challenging issues. 

Although well-versed in dealing with HNW and international clients, Michael points to a particularly grand case as a recent career highlight. This involved being appointed by a London court to be the administrator of a large estate left by the historic rulers of Hyderabad, and subject to competing claims from India and Pakistan.
