Leeds-based Jonathan Sands explains that he won a client over to St. James’s Place Private Clients from Goldman Sachs because he took an hour-and-a-half-long phone call through dinner one evening. As director of Sands Wealth Management, a partner practice of St. James’s Place, Sands says there’s a £10 million to £20 million ‘sweet spot’ in his largely northern clientele, which also includes UHNWs. 

The secret to wealth management is ‘being passionate enough to care’, he says. 

‘If you care enough, it’s not just a corporate machine. At the very heart of it is finding out what [clients] want, forgetting the products – it’s finding out what they really want, and not presuming.’
