Brown Advisory

Company profile

Brown Advisory offers expertise across equity, fixed income, ESG, alternative and private investment strategies — all backed by a commitment to an intensive research process. This dedication has enabled Brown Advisory to invest successfully through the most challenging market conditions, generating strong, long-term investment results and building lasting client relationships.

For individuals, families and charities, Brown Advisory designs and implements personalised portfolios that match the financial circumstances of each client, their investment objectives and appetite for risk. Portfolio managers are flexible and responsive in the management of clients’ portfolios and the firm’s active approach balances opportunities and risks as they see them, enabling them to adapt to developing conditions in the global economy and financial markets.

Personal investment portfolios are often inextricably intertwined with other aspects and dynamics of family wealth, such as tax structuring, succession planning, business interests and philanthropic intentions. Brown Advisory employs strategic advisors who have expertise in these areas and work closely with clients and their other advisers to ensure investment plans are developed and enacted seamlessly.

The firm also has significant expertise in sustainable investing. Sustainable investing is not an asset class, nor is it a portfolio ‘factor’ — rather, Brown Advisory sees it as a holistic approach to investing that takes into account a broad range of environmental, social and governance (ESG) matters as well as client-specific priorities. Brown Advisory believes that sustainable investing can deliver results in three broad areas: it can improve and drive financial returns, it can align a portfolio with a set of mission-driven principles, and it can steer capital towards investments that generate positive societal impact. Often, sustainable investment research has contributed to Brown Advisory’s investment results by helping to identify material risks and opportunities that may not have revealed themselves otherwise.

Since Brown Advisory’s international business was launched in 2008, it has grown to employ 65 colleagues in London whilst serving private clients, charities, financial intermediaries and institutions in 39 countries worldwide representing approximately $20 billion in client assets. Brown Advisory’s international business has further enhanced the firm’s global perspective and adds value to the investment research and service capabilities for Brown Advisory clients across the globe.

Brown Advisory has been an independent firm since 1998, managing traditional and ESG portfolios for individuals, families, charities and institutions with offices in the US, UK and Singapore, responsible for approximately $130 billion in client assets globally. Every colleague has an equity interest and together own approximately 70% of the firm.

The remaining 30% is owned by select outside investors who provide insight, perspective and stability. All of these owners are aligned in the desire to build a firm that puts clients above all else.
