Daniel Crouch

Spear’s Review

‘The story behind a work of art is in many respects as important as the work of art itself,’ says Daniel Crouch of Daniel Crouch Rare Books.

A specialist in rare maps, atlases, globes and scientific instruments, he highlights a favourite – the Viscount Maggiolo 1531 Planisphere, a goatskin map of the voyages of Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano.

Market interest in cartography has grown in recent years, Crouch says, and buyers have become increasingly appreciative of their long-term value. ‘Maps are compatible with contemporary homes, and so don’t suffer from looking dated,’ he notes.
