Spear’s Review

Only 16km from the centre of Athens, Campion claims to be ‘the first international school in the [city] for many years to build a fully equipped and modern facility for all of its children’. Its state-of-the-art facilities include a football pitch, a running track, and tennis and basketball courts.

The school was founded in 1970 by Elizabeth and Thomas Shortell, American philhellenes. They sought to create a school based in Athens which would enable youth to have access to quality education that would adequately prepare them for top-class universities in Europe and North America.

Fifty years later, the Shortells’ dream has come to fruition, with the majority of students graduating from Campion continuing their education at universities in the UK. Other students have gone on to study at leading universities in America, including Columbia and Wharton.

Head teacher

Michael Henderson, headmaster at Campion since 2021, previously served as head of seniors and head of PE at the school.
