Ben Chance

Spear’s Review

Ben Chance was part of the trio of senior appointments LGT Wealth Management made in 2015 to enhance its private office offering, which aims to provide UHNWs with ‘wide-ranging, in-depth wealth management services’ as an outsourced family office, on top of general portfolio management.

Chance is now head of private office and a partner at the firm, specialising in advising private clients, families and intermediaries with their complex affairs, and proudly acts as a stakeholder alongside his clients’ most valuable investments.

Adviser Profile

Building trust is an absolutely fundamental requirement of being an effective adviser, and something Ben Chance always focuses on. Nothing is more pleasing to him than building a relationship over time; it is the ultimate signifier of a job well done. With the turbulence that has become entrenched in financial markets in recent years, not to mention the broadening investment opportunities available to UHNW investors, a trusted adviser is ever more important.

The LGT Private Office was established to offer precisely that; tailoring outsourced family office services alongside a broader investment and structuring offering. Ben moved to Head the Private Office team in 2021, having spent three years as a Partner within it. In keeping with the firm ethos, he views himself as a stakeholder alongside the UHNW clients he looks after. It’s a position of ultimate privilege, he says, performing the role of a trusted adviser overseeing a variety of liquid and illiquid investments, lending, family governance, philanthropy and strategic planning matters for some of the world’s wealthiest families. Chance deals with a range of global investors, many of whom have strong financial experience, and a passion for the investments they make. ‘They want an active relationship,’ he notes. The trusted adviser spends a vital part of his role guiding his clients through the specialised landscapes of alternative investments, flexible portfolios and private equity investments.

The first phone call on Monday morning is likely to be from a client who had been ‘emailing the day before’. The intensity might alarm some, but this experienced wealth manager looks forward to ‘a constant flow of views, thoughts and general discussion which is what makes that person tick’, he says. ‘Often, it’s a batting back and forth of ideas, rather than a specific investment query.’
