Spear’s Review

‘Lo here is fellowship’ is the motto of Broomfield House School. It was coined by the first known headmistress of the school, Miss Sara Eliza Mead, who was a rumoured descendent of King Charles II. The school was established in 1876 and is the oldest private school in Kew.

Broomfield’s history has been preserved in the school’s existing infrastructure, but it has made significant advancements in its modernisation. Its computing studio has recently replaced its PCs with iPads and it now looks to invest in a ‘forward-thinking IT lab and STEM space’.

Parents have responded positively to Broomfield’s ethos of combining tradition with modernity. One parent enthuses that ‘the staff are professionals and know very well the needs of each child at school’.

Head teacher

Adam Anstey has been the headmaster of Broomfield House School since February 2023. Over the past 17 years he has held a number of leadership positions in day and boarding schools, in settings from early years to A-Level, in the state and independent sectors. He holds a PGDE from the University of Aberystwyth, a NPQSL from Edge Hill University and, most recently, completed the University of Buckingham’s senior leadership programme. He is also a fellow of the Chartered College of Teaching. Before moving to London, he was the director of IT at Sherborne Prep School.

Admissions

According to the school:

The main entry point is a nursery class in the September after a child’s third birthday. Offers are made in the autumn term prior to the year of entry. Priority is given to younger siblings, children of former pupils and staff, and to children attending Broomfield’s sister nursery school, Riverside Nurseries. Any children joining the pre-kindergarten class will automatically progress into the kindergarten (reception) class the following September.

There is a waiting list for children seeking admission into all other year groups.

Broomfield does not assess children joining its early years and transition classes. Children entering in year 2 and above will be asked to join a trial morning session and undergo some ‘gentle assessments’, participate in some lessons and have lunch and break times with prospective classmates.
