Struan McDougall’s private members club-style investment firm, Cambridge Capital Group, provides ‘a qualified deal flow in a specialist market’, enabling investors to ‘collaborate as a group of angels’. Their networking hub, founded by McDougall in 2000, brings together HNWs who want to tap into hi-tech companies with IP. This niche investment landscape is ‘booming, especially with the emergence of crowdfunding,’ he says. 

He has also noticed co-investment and ‘evergreen’ funds plugging gaps in a fluctuating market. Distinguishing the good punt from the bad is the main challenge. ‘There are so many start-ups looking for funding,’ he says, ‘but very few make it to the commercial stage.’
