Ed Sugden, who now plies his trade in Savills’ country house department, started his career as a chartered surveyor at Cluttons in West Sussex.

He moved to John D Wood in Oxford and, later, Property Vision, where he stayed for 14 years and led its country arm, before arriving at Savills in 2013, where he is now a director and chair of the executive committee. Having more than 25 years’ industry experience, Sugden specialises in private, off-market sales, with a clientele of aristocrats, celebrities, captains of industry, entrepreneurs and a range of international HNWs.

One of his biggest challenges to date was saving a palatial Grade I-listed house with land, and selling it on as an estate with more than 1,000 acres. Sugden worked in tandem with ‘an incredible team’ of advisers to secure wider planning consent.

‘It’s a wholly consuming, but enjoyable career,’ he says. ‘Differing challenges and conundrums lead to a different day, every day.’ 

His grandfather and Ireland rugby captain, Mark Sugden, is his personal hero. ‘He was a gentleman in the real sense of the word.’
