Spear’s Review

The first British international school in Malaysia was founded as a practical solution to a practical problem: in 1946 Alice Smith couldn’t find a school for her own daughter so she started one. Alice Smith School has expanded from its humble beginnings. It now has 53 different nationalities among its nearly 1,600 pupils, and academic results are strong, with 86 per cent achieving A* to B grades at A-level.

Head teacher

Head of school Sian May describes herself as an ‘experienced, strategic, values-driven and student-centred leader of international education’. Prior to joining Alice Smith School, she was director of a senior school in Singapore for four years.

Admissions

According to the school:

Alice Smith School is not selective; however, students will need to demonstrate the capacity and capability to benefit from our curriculum. All applicants are required to complete an assessment (which varies according to the age of the student) prior to the offer of a place. This is to ensure their needs can be met within our school setting, in an age-appropriate class. Secondary applicants are required to provide evidence of prior academic attainment.

Candidates are assessed on an ongoing basis, within one month of the application being received. This assessment will ascertain whether a child should be offered a place or placed in the waiting pool if a place is not immediately available. Assessments are valid for 12 months from the date of completion, although follow up assessments may be required, especially if a place is not taken up within that time.

University and college places

Over the last three years, students have progressed to top-ranked universities in the UK, US and worldwide, including prestigious UK Russell Group and US Ivy League universities.
